Enjoy the panorama over the city you have built with your ally...

Or at least what will remain of it...

Water bringing life to the desert

Context

Babel is my graduation game at ESMA - Toulouse. We're a team of ten (including an associate sound designer). Our goal is to spend ten months to carry a full game production from pitch to ship.

The original pitch of Babel was to make a real time strategy game about building the mythical Babel tower. However, a lot of water has passed under the bridge, shaping Babel into the cooperative city builder it is today.

Struck by a sandstorm, two small desert tribes have lost everything . With another player, rebuild the city, unite the tribes, upgrade your buildings, and get ready to face the next storm ! You will enjoy your shared city ... while it lasts.

But what did I do ?

In the Babel team, I've found my role balance being a game designer at the begining of milestones, and switching to programmer to help the production before shipping.

I have dealt with issues such as :

  • Iterating the initial game concept

  • Preparating oral presentations to introduce new feature ideas to the team

  • Find and trial design retakes (prototype, test, iterate)

  • Developping data structures alongside with the design

  • Developping integration pipelines

If you want a more technical insight, here's a focus below :

How we create variety

The field of possibilities framework

How Babel went multiplayer

The cursed problem framework
